Electroluminescent Backlighting

EL Design Guide

Nelson Produces Electroluminescent Backlighting Lamps by printing Phosphors between two conductive layers. One of the conductive layers is transparent so that phosphors emit light when a DC Voltage is applied to them. The advantages of EL Lamps are:

  • Uniform backlight
  • Thin (.007" typ>)
  • Flexible, and can be put on top of tactile domes
  • Low power (.5 mA per sq in typ.)

They are best suited for low and no light applications where the backlight is not always on because the phosphors tend to decay with extended use at high voltages and frequencies.

Outlined below are two typical decay curves:

EL Lamps are available in 4 colors:

  • White
  • Blue
  • Blue-Green
